Smartphone manufacturers have created something of a βbattery awareness syndromeβ in the minds of consumers. Weβll use Apple as our example: not only do they have an Optimized Battery Charging setting, but they also recommend you never let your battery fully drain. Or never fully charge. Or stay around 80%.Β Β
Sound confusing? As the recommendations seem to be less than clear, itβs also caused concerns in other industries, namely for electric vehicle owners. Today, we want toΒ address the question of whether you should charge your electric car every night.Β
Battery basics 101Β
How many AA batteries have you thrown away throughout your life? EnvironmentalΒ impact aside, all batteries are consumable. You probably have had to replace theΒ battery in your gasoline-powered vehicle before, seeing whatβs called a βcore chargeβΒ on your receipt. This is to encourage consumers to return them so that those types ofΒ batteries donβt end up in a landfill like their smaller brethren.Β
Lithium-ion batteries are no different. Over time, their maximum capacity degrades.Β This is why contrary to popular belief, your two-year-old smartphone doesnβt hold aΒ charge like it did when you first purchased it.Β Β
What is optimized charging?Β
Optimized charging is the smartphone manufacturerβs solution to extending battery life.Β The more a phone is charged to 100%, the smaller the maximum capacity that batteryΒ has. Overnight, your phone will charge to 100%, stop charging, drain some, and thenΒ recharge back to 100%. This is to ensure it has a full charge when you wake up but atΒ the risk of slowly eating away at your maximum capacity.Β
Optimized charging βholdsβ the charge back to 80%, pausing your charging once it hitsΒ that percentage. Then, a few hours before you normally get up, it finishes the charge.Β
Should I charge my electric car to 100%?Β
Does this mean that your electric vehicle should never hit 100% charge? As these areΒ also lithium-ion units, does the same principle apply to your electric car and truck as itΒ does to your smartphone?Β
Generally speaking, most experts agree: the same principle applies. The extreme endsΒ of the charging spectrum β 0% and 100% β tend to degrade your electric car batteryΒ just as it does your smartphone. While some manufacturers have warranties to easeΒ your mind, there are some steps you can take.Β
Should I charge my electric vehicle nightly?Β
Namely, never leave your car in a state of constant charging. If you donβt plan to leaveΒ your home for a day or two, then donβt charge your car battery every night.
Likewise, youβll want to install an electric vehicle charger that has a similar type ofΒ βoptimized chargingβ as we described above. Together, these two steps can helpΒ prolong the life of your electric vehicle battery.Β
Choosing the right kind of electric vehicle chargerΒ
There are two primary types of electric car chargers: the aptly named Level One andΒ Level Two EV chargers. Each has its pros and cons, and weβll work with homeownersΒ and businesses alike to help them decide which is best for them.Β
